Evangelist accuses Obama of 'distorting' Bible - CNN.com

"I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own world view, his own confused theology," Dobson said, adding that Obama is "dragging biblical understanding through the gutter."

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

"Evangelicals are people who take Bible interpretation very seriously..."

Tom Minnery
Focus on the Family

From here...

James Dobson wrote an article for Time Magazine on Mary Cheney's pregnancy, "Two Mommies is One Too Many". He quoted two researchers, Dr. Kyle Pruett of Yale Medical School and educational psychologist Carol Gilligan, to back up his point of view.

Both researchers have rebuked Dobson for distorting their research and have demanded that he not use their work in the future.

In comments aired on his radio show Tuesday, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson criticized the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee for comments he made in a June 2006 speech to the liberal Christian group Call to Renewal.

Dobson is just noting that Obama is a Democrat and a liberal. He suggests that conservatives not support him.

Obama is a Democrat and a liberal. Conservatives probably won't support him because of his liberal position.

(Yawn). Move along. Nothing to see here...

What is amazing is that CNN found this non-story to be worth publicizing.

I hope Obama does not get bogged down in religious arguments, but his points are relevant and well-made, imo, evangelical outrage notwithstanding.

I think Dobson is trying to get into an argument, and agree that Obama should avoid it if possible. His points make sense in some ways, but they are also framed with words like fruitcake and gutter. This is a ploy.

Dobson is twisting Obama's words as well. His assertion that Obama (who said that law and policy issues should be framed with law and policy language) was actually saying that people can't fight for what they believe doesn't follow.

I think Dobson has been loosed, to sniff out and attack. He's looking for weak points which he would prefer to be somewhere near Obama's heart.

Dobson and individual like him have the right to their opinions yet stand for everything that is unholy when they preach that their way is the only way. I believe in the Bible, and I guess Dobson would be speaking of the King James Bible, there is a statement about judging. First of all the word Bible in the true sense means collection of books and therefor when you speak of the Bible you could be speaking of many other holy books other than the Christian or Jewish books of the Bible.

What ever Bible you read out of the important lesson to learn is to take the good advice out of it not to point your finger at others who have different beliefs than you or the beliefs of the organization, religion or church that you attend.

It's a shame that we all including Obama have to be so careful when speaking of something that we all could better ourselves from.

This is very interesting. It says that most Americans don't believe that their faith is the only way to heaven.

You might find the survey done by Pew of interest. It does not say that at all. What it does say is that most Americans believe in God or some sort of First Cause, yet that they don't feel that their way is the only way. Far from what Dobson is preaching.

Better explain myself a bit better JCAtom. What you say Pew has found to be the way most Americans believe, however not all Americans who do or don't believe have based their beliefs on faith alone.

Ira, we're not in disagreement. Please note the italicized word don't in my previous comment.

I think that study is extremely encouraging. Did you know that Tony Blair has dedicated his efforts to interfaith communication? That's seems like a good thing to do.

I think that Dobson is trying to derail Obama. According to the Pew study, Dobson doesn't even hold the majority opinion among his own group of Christians. That's encouraging too, as I mentioned in my comment at the link to the Pew study seed.

JCAtom,

We are in agreement. The Pew survey seems to be saying just what you write.. I'm sure that Dobson and his organization does not like the results of the Pew survey. He will go on thumping his Bible as long as the dollars come in. And they will come in. He will hurt Obama a bit, but that is a given. The greatest shame is that he preaches to fathers and mothers with his "Focus on the Family" programs. What it all comes down to is another generation of closed minded irate individuals who will send their hard earned money to another Dobson. What a shame!

Dobson takes money from the aged as they are most susceptible to the kind of telemarketing he does. It would be interesting to know how much is supposed to be contributions or gifts and whether taxes are paid.

I agree with JCAtom, those eyes are revealing. His antics are to be expected, now that the GOP has ruined their own brand. What else can they do?
