Intel has signed a deal with Yahoo to enhance the way people use their TVs by adding internet applications.

The collaboration will produce a Widget Channel that lets viewers e-mail friends, trade shares or check the weather while watching programmes.

"This is not a copy of a PC on TV," said Eric Kim, head of Intel's digital home group.

"We are setting a new bar and delivering a richer internet experience to TV like never before," he said.

I already get the weather in a bottom bar from Comcast. El boring. As far as email - you definitely couldn't do that in a small bar on a standard resolution screen. Standard def is horrible for text, which is why WebTV made every size 100 font, just to be readable.

If you have an HDTV there are more interesting ways to get the web, like just plugging in a VGA cable. That's my set up, and wow, Netflix's "Watch Instantly" is finally a great feature. Unfortunately I can't do PIP with one pic being TV and one pic being the PC input - that would be the ultimate example of what they seem to be aiming for. That would let you blog about the game during commercials, and then drag the game back to full screen when they're over.
