Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

They will develop portable 100-kilowatt laser weapons for installation on a barge for testing and to collect data on maritime atmospheric propagation and killing power in the open ocean.

The idea, ultimately, is to develop technology and know-how necessary to build megawatt-power free electron laser weapons that provide ultra-precise, speed-of-light capability and unlimited magazine depth for ship defense.

Cool! The USAF has one mounted in a 747.

I hope you don't mind, I am clipping this to Military and Veterans Vine.

In related news, the U.S. Navy has asked researchers at major US Aquatic installations to look into the possibility of shark-mounted defense systems using newly developed laser beam technology.

This development comes on the heels of disappointing results using ill-tempered Sea Bass and the loosening of environmental restrictions that prohibited research with sharks.

You must be referring to Operation Sea Basstard and the newer, more promising operation...Shark Shooters.

I've worked on these type of Lasers. An interesting field to work in, we installed them on commercial aircraft along with IR Tracking Lasers. The design was the same as what the military uses now.
