Nearly lost amidst the breathless anticipation of all things wireless...is the potential impact these gadgets may have on scientific instruments that likewise need access to the electromagnetic spectrum. Yet the proliferation of wireless technologies, licensed and otherwise, grabbing increasingly more spectrum bandwidth is interfering significantly with scientists' ability to monitor radio emissions from the Earth and space that "yield vital information" about our planet and its place in the universe, according to a report released Monday...
Interference from wireless devices make it difficult for scientists to gather signals used for radio astronomy and Earth environmental sensing, in some cases rendering these signals unusable, says the 175-page report, written in response to concerns that NASA, the Department of Commerce, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) have raised about the increasing potential for new wireless technologies to interfere with radio observations that have become important to the missions of these agencies.
The National Research Council committee determined that passive remote sensing observations are essential for monitoring Earth's natural systems and are therefore critical to human safety, the day-to-day operations of the government and the private sector, and the policy-making processes governing many sectors of the United States economy. The committee also found that radio astronomy has great potential for further fundamental discoveries, including the origins and evolution of the universe, the nature of matter, and life in other solar systems, which will have "an enormous impact on our understanding of fundamental physics and the place of humanity in the Universe."
We really need to set up radio telescopes on the far side of the moon, shielded from the broad spectrum noise of the earth. A few relay stations in orbit around the moon could handle the communications. That would actually give a concrete reason for going back there.
On a different but possibly relevant subject, have you noticed the large uptick of autism in children with the proliferation of Wi-Fi and other radio frequency devices and the proliferation of computers. There may be a correlation with the autism problem and electronic devices used so much these days. Kinda sounds a little "Johnny Nuemonic" I know but what if?...Of course there is the fact that there is more information about autism and parents are being more attentive to the possibilities.
Good article, I'll have to check out the full report. Agree Dave do need to make use of the moon for science, but can that actually be done vis-a-vis the earth and say earthquakes. Is the wireless etc, interfering with the earthquake monitors and can that be monitored from space?
I was thinking more along the lines of radio astronomy. You need to be sheltered from the huge amounts of radio noise we put out in order to get good data.
This article also hits closer to home for some of us. I have a defibrillator. I'm not allowed to use a cell phone with my left hand, as it can affect the unit in my left upper torso.
I also found out that one of the hand held gaming units my daughter was using is affected by the defibrillator too. We were trying to play "Scrabble" and each time she handed me the game unit it locked up. It emits a signal, which is picked up by a unit next to my bed. This downloads information to my cardiologist and collects the info each night.
