Jonathan Klein, offered a choice to Lou Dobbs, the channel's most outspoken anchor. Mr. Dobbs could vent his opinions on radio and anchor an objective newscast on television, or he could leave CNN.
For a time, Mr. Dobbs did tone down his TV rhetoric, but on Wednesday he made a more drastic decision: He chose opinion.
Mr. Dobbs told viewers that he was resigning from his CNN job immediately.
Mr. Dobbs quit CNN once before, in 1999, after disputes with the network’s president at the time, Rick Kaplan. That time, he also exited midweek, on a Tuesday. He became the chief executive of Space.com, an astronomy news source, but returned to the network two years later.
I've definitely seen him from time to time when he sounded drunk. Maybe just a heavy dose of cold&flu meds...but he was slurring.
Oh, and he's been coming off as some sort of a slickster curmudgeon. When I first took note of him, he was more serious...less smiley...and possibly sincere. Lately he just seems like he belongs on Fox, and that he says things in order to be sensational.
Not going to miss him.
Lou Dobbs should be at Fox. Fox should be in the dumpster.
I guess it's true. The left does eat it's young! If you don't like someone, backstab them and tell lies about them. Good going left, keep up your good work!
Which lies?...and which young?
It seems that you may be so immersed in Fox-think that you are mistaking my opinion for a representation of fact. I can understand how that would happen after regular viewing of Beck and...can't remember his name...the other one who yells and cusses. Anyway, I'm not eating my young. Dobbs isn't very young anyway.
Your right about one thing, he isn't very young!
I might watch CNN again.
They should hire Dan Rather.
me too. i think cnn should hire a non white for the anchor. shows they are with the times
Neesy08, or just a qualified person. Why do companies need to set out to hirer a "non-white"? Wouldn't that be considered racism? If someone set out to hire just a white person, people would be screaming.
CNN was never better than when it had Bernard Shaw.
The hiring of an Hispanic would be poetic justice. That's exactly why they should do it.
They could Rick Sanchez into prime time.
sounds better every time i hear it!!!
luv,
ron
They should replace him with a Hispanic commentator.
I mean, wouldn't that just drive him out of his waspy skull?
LOL.
You beat me to it!
“If CNN wants to be seen as the thoughtful, unbiased, middle of the road alternative to Fox News on the right and MSNBC on the left, this decision goes along with that,” said Geneva Overholser, the director of the School of Journalism at the University of Southern California.
Lou Dobbs
I speculate Faux Noise......? L8R Lou.
CNN needs someone more objective. This is a good move for them.
CNN actually has something that MSNBC and FOX don't bother to have....REPORTERS.
Ted Turner was making noises about wanting to have more control over CNN. I think that would be a good thing.
CNN isn't too bad, when compared to MSNBC.
Gulliver, how often do you tune in to fox, to say they don't have reporters? Amy Kellog, Greg Palkot, James Rosen, Rick Leventhal.... Ainsley Erhardt, Kimberly Guilfoyle.... need more? Perhaps you should watch more than a portion of OReilly, Beck or Hannity.
OK, FOX has people who dress up like reporters and play the part for the camera..
CNN actually has news bureaus and is a news organization.
Gulliver:
lol, if it looks like a reporter, sounds like a reporter and dresses like a reporter, it's probably a reporter.
again, try watching it more than just to get annoyed over whatever opinions beck or hannity are espousing.
CNN actually has news bureaus
fox also has news bureaus: Washington DC, Bagdad, London (via sky news)...
news organization
noun
an agency to collect news reports for newspapers and distributes it electronically
so, following the logic based on your argument, fox news is a news organization as much as CNN is. :)
I might add, that you don't like what is being reported or how it is being reported has no bearing on whether or not it is news, or that said organization disseminating that information is not a news organization.
..but Fox still isn't a news channel. It's a disinformation channel run by a Republican operative. It's much worse than a bias problem. The people that walk talk and look like reporters are stage props.
..but Fox still isn't a news channel. It's a disinformation channel
Is that an opinion, or fact? If it's just your opinion, then refer to post #6.5. If you consider it fact, please provide me with evidence to support such a claim. Otherwise, it's my opinion you're an ill-informed liberal ideologue. (though, that opinion could also be fact, evidenced by your posts here) :)
it's my opinion you're an ill-informed liberal ideologue.
It's my opinion that your opinion is.....
oh gulliver, you needn't be so polite! I'll take your quick retort to mean your assertion that fox news isn't a real news channel is merely opinion. :) good day, sir. or madam. though you strike me as a sir, in the most liberal of meanings ;)
Clearly you are young and naive enough to believe that someone with Roger Ailes background could actually be running a "fair and balanced news" organization and not a propaganda outlet for the GOP.
At least on MSNBC, they do not pretend to be without left leaning sympathies. The main difference between the two cable news channels is that FOX News is constantly making stuff up.
About as clearly as you can provide me evidence that fox is not a news organization, but rather, a disinformation organization, as you put it. Other than, of course, citing Mr. Ailes. Yet, could the same not be said of CNN and Mr. Turner? Again, your logic has been found wanting.
Also, please note I never said 'fair and balanced'. I have been arguing your assertion that it was not a real news organization, not the merits of it being fair or not.
Again, your logic has been found wanting.
No it hasn't.
You have obviously not studied the discipline of Logic. but I'll leave you to your beliefs.
Writing a lengthy dissertation on what is wrong with FOX News is not something I am going to waste my time doing. I'm also not going to set up a Web Cam to prove that my refrigerator light goes out when I close the door.
Believe what you want.
Yesterday's Jon Stewart show summarized what Fox News does pretty well with the description "They subtly alter reality to fit a preconceived narrative." He used the recent doctoring of photographic images of the "crowds" at Michelle Bachman's rally to illustrate the point.
A sweet gal like you is far too young to be watching FOX News. It will screw you up for life.
Look for Lou Dobbs to become the prime-time opinion [super celebrity] broadcaster on the widely acclaimed "minute-men" racial news network.
Mr. Dobbs' career has no where to go, but, up! [up in smoke]
Actually, Lou Dobbs serves as a prime [time] example for mandatory Alzheimer's testing of news broadcasters over the age of 50. CNN viewers witnessed a long and painful demise of Mr. Dobbs over the last decade that could only be attributed to the ugly truth about older people in our media culture.
There simply is not a standard in journalism to objectively judge competense. As long as the ratings are up and the audience responds appropriate to advertisers brand association, media is content to let anyone with a following linger on for the sake of advertising revenue.
Take FOX Cable News for example...
Jon Klein, the man who put Glen Beck on television is portrayed here as concerned about fairness? Give me a break. The whole thing is fishy. I hate Dobbs, but Wolf Blitzer is just as right wing.
Klein would sell his granny for ratings and I doubt CNN is in the least interested in fair or accurate reporting. They ought to grab Chris Matthews. He's right wing enough for them.
Lou is going to run for President on the Tea Bagger / Anti Immigration Party ticket.
Hey Tappy! Maybe Carrie Prejean can be his running mate! Do you know where I can contact the RNC to suggest it?t?
I think Carrie Prejean is going to be John McCain's running mate. She has a nicer rack and is dumber than Sarah Palin which makes her a better running mate.
Unlike Sarah Palin, Carrie Prejean will just leave when someone asks her a question she can't answer.
He belongs on Faux News/Entertainment channel.
I wonder what his wife and children feel about his anti immigration stance.
and his Mexican in-laws that live with him.
JB....do you see anything wrong or problematic with the invasion of illegals? Does the rule of law have any significance to you?
JB....do you see anything wrong or problematic with the invasion of illegals? Does the rule of law have any significance to you?
I would like to go back in time and ask the American Indians the same question. Talk about invasion of illegals.
Do you see anything wrong or problematic with people/companies hiring illegals and taking advantage of them?
Do you see anything wrong or problematic with American companies outsourcing jobs to sweat shops in China, Vietnam, etc.?
just to nitpick:
the native americans did not consider the land to be "owned" by them. the concept of land ownership was foreign to them, as they lived in communion with the earth. had the settlers been of a similar mindset, things might have turned out differently. while they had territories, or boundaries, your comparison lacks the common foundation needed to compare apples to apples.
I can't wait for his sex tape to air......
This wasn't abrupt at all... I thought it was known 2 months ago that he was going to do a show on FOX?... I read it... I know I did.
JB-1123320 said, "He belongs on Faux News/Entertainment channel - I wonder what his wife and children feel about his anti immigration stance".
What??? Immigration??? We are talking about Illegal immigration and there is a BIG Difference... right?? Or do you think anyone who wants to should just come on over join right is our little country???? Why not invite 1 billion Chinese to come on over, don't stop at the border just cross the river it's ok??? why not? Or the whole of South America, or how about europe... OMG stop the Bs please.... we have to have limits right??? who can you possibly disagree??? really... is that racism??? Wow....
You have to be kidding me...your comment is so irresponsible but then again you don't think anyone is responsible for what they do... right; isn't that the point of liberal groups and the left wing media... hedonism and self indulgence...right
Epicurus's garden???
CNN is a mouth piece for the Liberal Agenda thugs. It rarely gives objective and professional reporting of the news. Furthermore, it caters to the minorities in the form of special programing such as "Black in America" and "Hispanic in America" These shows amount to nothing more than one sided Liberal spun propaganda.
Lou Dobbs was the only one that did not fit that mold on CNN. He will be missed.
CNN is a mouth piece for the Liberal Agenda thugs
Hardly.
it caters to the minorities in the form of special programing such as "Black in America" and "Hispanic in America"
I must remember to TIVO Riverdance this St. Patrick's Day.
Lou Dobbs was the only one that did not fit that mold on CNN.
Lou Dobbs was killing CNN and probably inspired more than one hate crime. Good riddance!
Opinions are like...
Any schmuck can have an opinion. TV news ratings reflect populist appeal. Opinions fuel this clique. If you look at the problems we face as a nation, having an opinion won't fix anything. Just read the damn news. I'll do my own thinking, thank you very much.
...and they all stink.
I'll do my own thinking, thank you very much.
I try to figure out when I listen to or read opinions what the guy/gal knows or has figured out that I haven't been able to yet. There's an awful lot of smart people out there and it's foolish to think you can figure out everything for yourself.
But it sure doesn't hurt to keep an eye out for BS.
it's foolish to think you can figure out everything for yourself.
Point well made. I was merely trying to a) point out that opinion, a.k.a. talking points etc., can be deliberately limited in scope. b) I'll do my thinin' Baba Looey. It may be wrong or short sighted, but it's mine to do.
BTW-I think I have trust issues. I read to much Jefferson.
Well you do make a good point that if you get swallowed up by the talking points you will be lost in a world of orchestrated political theater.
I think the administration and the Democrats are making some bad choices. But the populist opposition to the administration is a bit looney and incoherent. It makes it hard to get traction making legitimate criticisms of the administration.
What is usually missing on MSNBC, FOX , or CNN is breaking outside of the two party duopoly on talking points to get some people who don't have an interest in either party to offer up some crtiques. At least PBS has some academics on as guests.
The only real chance we had of your vision, was if the dems swung things so far to the left, as to isolate the middle and the right. With the advent of center left/right thinking in each of the two parties. The center gets split in two, on most issues. Most people don't see the center as a political force anymore. They see it as center left or center right. Mostly because they can be swayed to one party or the other. Instead of holding to a "Common Good" mindset.
I get what you are saying, but I don't see it quite as you do.
I see the system broken more along the lines that Ralph Nader describes. Both parties are chasing after corporate mega-dollars and it makes both parties a pack of liars.
Politicians run two campaigns. They run one campaign in public for the votes of the people and another stealth campaign in backrooms for the support of corporations and the "establishments." Obama got caught red handed during the campaign when he was bad mouthing NAFTA to labor unions. A few days later it was leaked that his adviser Austan Goolsbee was reassuring the Canadians that Obama had no intention of upsetting the apple cart with regard to NAFTA. After the elections are over, both parties set about doing the bidding of their "coropate pay masters."
This health care reform "debate" fits this description to a "T." It's going to be an expensive boondoggle that insures just a few more people, mainly through personal responsibility, while allowing costs to soar and cutting funding for Medicare. It's a health care insurance company's wet dream and they are going through the motions of opposing it anyway.
The parties create a false political center between them so they can split a difference that winds up being what the corporations and war profiteers want rather than what a majority of the people want.. It's why Obama coddles Blue Dogs and Arlen Specter and Olympia Snowe. It's so Obama can keep the promises to the corporations while telling the people he did the "best he could."
It's disgusting.
The parties create a false political center between them so they can split a difference that winds up being what the corporations and war profiteers want rather than what a majority of the people want..
Reminds me of the old saying, "The ends justify means." Eh comrade? A different path to the same place, philosophically. And yes, it is disgusting and ripe with disillusion.
