This dazzling picture of our planet, all dark but the cerulean sliver of the South Pole, was a long time coming.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Pretty picture.

So, the earth's rotation is distorted space-time more than expected, eh? Can I use this excuse for my next speeding ticket?

I too find the image beautiful but I am more interested in the gravitational anomalies resulting in an unexpected boost, this reminds me of the precession of the perihelion of Mercury. We are on the verge of the next great discovery about gravity, perhaps this one will unify quantum physics and relativity.

This song immediately came to mind.

Standing on the moon
I see the battle rage below
Standing on the moon
I see the soldiers come and go
There's a metal flag beside me
Someone planted long ago
Old Glory standing stiffly
Crimson, white and indigo - indigo

I see all of Southeast Asia
I can see El Salvador
I hear the cries of children
And the other songs of war
It's like a mighty melody
That rings down from the sky
Standing here upon the moon
I watch it all roll by - all roll by

Standing on the moon

Where talk is cheap and vision true

Standing on the moon
But I would rather be with you
Somewhere in San Francisco
On a back porch in July
Just looking up to heaven
At this crescent in the sky
